CREATIVE CATS

by Rickie Garr

Welcome to the art department, which consists of Kindergarten through twelfth grade. During the school year we undertake a wide range of projects across the various grade levels. All classes are studio based meaning students learn through hands on experience. .Learning by application or doing is one of the highest proven forms for retention of knowledge. This also provides a forum for creativity and expression.
At the elementary level the focus is on the basics as each grade level builds upon the previous one. This is accomplished using both review and new exploration. In junior high students do multi-cultural studies using the history, culture, and lands of the people as the basis. Then they construct projects using this knowledge base. Art I class addresses the art elements and principles in depth for the first two quarters. This is done using hands on projects. The last two quarters are devoted to the exploration of technique and media. Art II and III become more specifically geared to the individual’s level of experience and expertise. Art Appreciation deals with art history by the study of artists and their work, with attention to style, technique, media, and inspiration. The artist’s biographical information is also reviewed as to its effect on the artwork. The art department is always a busy place as each class aspires to raise their level of knowledge, skills and expertise.
