Mrs. Graham's Summer Vacation

June 23, 2010

One of my favorite things I did this summer was to spend a whole week with my parents.  Since they live in Colorado Springs, I only get to see them once a year.  So I was very excited when they came out to visit for Memorial weekend.  We went up to Memphis, MO were my dad grew up (and my grandmother still lives there).  While there, we went to the Memorial Day service that has been held downtown ever since World War II ended.  We ended our trip there with a drive through town and listening to my father reminisce about his childhood.

After visiting my grandmother, we went back to Kansas City, where my younger sister lives, and then my daughter and I traveled on to Colorado with my parents.  It was a VERY long car ride.  My daughter did a better job of sitting in the car than I did on the way out there.

Once in Colorado Springs, we went to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and were able to feed giraffes some crackers and we even got to pet a baby kangaroo!  The next day we went to ride on a steam engine train through the mountains.  My daughter and I both had soot on our faces by the time the ride was over.  The next to last day we were there we traveled to my favorite mountain...Pike's Peak!  We rode up the mountain in the car and then ate fresh made doughnuts in the summit house.  There is no better doughnut than one made at 14,110 feet above sea level.  I even went on a little hike while on the summit.  I didn't go too far, just enough to be able to say I hiked the summit.

I hope you have had as wonderful a summer vacation as I have had this year!
