Nigerian Artist Visits Bronaugh

March 31, 2011

On Tuesday March 29th Ibiyinka Olufemi Alao visited our school.  He is an artist who recently represented his country — Nigeria — and became the first place winner of the prestigious United Nations International Art Competition amongst 61 countries.  His paintings are currently in the United States on tour. They have been exhibited at the Harvard Business School, the Indianapolis Art Center, the Nigerian Consulate, the Nigerian Embassy, the United Nations headquarters, the World Bank headquarters, as well as the Empire State Building.  In between exhibitions, Ibiyinka finds himself giving open lectures at universities and setting up workshops in community centers across the country.

We were lucky to have Nigeria’s Art ambassador visit us and do a K-12 assembly, where he played the drums, taught African songs, shared his artwork, and discussed his lifestyle as a child growing up in Nigeria and as a UN Ambassador for Nigeria.  Following the assembly He did several workshops with the elementary.  He taught the Kindergarten how to make a “circle of friends” which will soon be on display at the school.  He taught 1st through 3rd grade how to shade and blend using water colors.  Also he did a perspective water color activity with the 4th through 6th grade classes.
